Spartans 22, USM 16
The Spartan JV Football season started off with a thriller at University School. In a game that was scoreless at halftime, the Spartan offense stepped up in the second half behind two touchdown throws from freshman quarterback Tony Chambers and a third TD toss by freshman quarterback Azariah Coffaro. Sophomore receiver Nick Scheidt was on the receiving end of two of the Spartan touchdowns and junior receiver Francisco Sandoval caught the third. Freshman receiver Josh Peterson stepped up and added pressure on the ground after he was forced to move to running back due to injuries.
The Spartan defense was a stone wall all night, stuffing the USM run game and forcing two turnovers on interceptions by Peterson and Scheidt. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Reich and junior linebacker Aevean Rodriguez were standouts for the Spartan defense, making tackles all over the field. The defensive line added several sacks by a number of Spartans to hold out for the victory.
The JV Spartans play at home for the first time next Monday against Lake Country Lutheran in a cross-Association battle. Kickoff at Gene Schneider field is at 4:30.
