Many young athletes are cut from teams because they are not considered talented enough, they lack money to buy the necessary equipment, or their parents do not have enough influence in the community. The Engemann's believe that regardless of a child's situation, no one should be denied the opportunity to participate in hockey or lacrosse. The Spartan motto is, "no boy or girl will ever be turned away for any reason." Discrimination is not tolerated. Lack of talent or finances will not prevent a boy or girl from becoming a team member and, when needed, the Club will find ways to supplement registration fees or find the necessary equipment. The Spartan Athletic Club started with 18 boys and the Engemanns. Today, enrollment tops 1,800 team members and over 150 volunteers. Players range in age from 3 to 21 and are from all over the Niagara Region. Many early players are volunteers and coaches today, and have children who are involved in the organization. There are over 40 house league hockey teams, five Rep teams and 14 mens teams. In lacrosse, there are 10 Rep teams, 7 house league teams, a Junior "B" team and a summer lacrosse school. Many of the teams have won Ontario and Canadian championships. With all this activity, the Club operates 365 days a year.
The Spartan Athletic Club also gives back to the community. Working hand-in-hand with the John Howard Society, the Club provides first-time young offenders with a place to fulfill their community service hours. Through this experience, Many of the boys gain confidence and self-esteem, and do not commit another offence. In fact, several continue to serve the Spartan's as valuable volunteers. Without the Spartan Athletic Club, there would be many more young people getting into some kind of trouble in the communities we serve. The Club attempts to instill in the players the values of reliability, dedication, responsibility and fair play. In most cases, we have succeeded. Club founders Joe and Rose Engemann have received many honours for their dedication to the Spartan Athletic Club. In 1992, they were inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in New Westminster, British Columbia, for their commitment to the sport. They have also been the recipients of awards from the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame and the Ontario Volunteer Award, as well as, the Peace Award from the YMCA. |
